Eagle Tower

Eagle Tower is an ancient fort built by the inhabitants of the Konavle region in the 4th century, which means that it is the oldest building and tourist attraction in the whole of the Dubrovnik area. The fort is older than the city of Dubrovnik, and was recently renovated and very closely regulated, while it has been well attended ever since its opening. The fort has been used for many centuries, first by the Illyrians, and later by the Romans and the people of the Republic of Ragusa. Named the Eagle Town or more often the Eagle Tower, this is the fort in the village of Dubravka in Gornje (Upper) Konavle. Even though the tower's forerunner dates from 4th century when the inhabitants of Konavle built it in that very place, the first written mention of the fortress dates from 1391. First people who lived in the fortress were Illyrians, but after that the fortress has been in the hands of Romans and Byzantines, and Bosnian nobles. However, in 1420 it came into the possession of the Republic of Ragusa, after the sale of Konavle. Since then, a continuous work on its upgrading, reorganization, reinforcement, arming and maintenance had begun. In the Eagle Tower's area there are traces of life that are 4000 years old. The fort survived the great earthquake in 1667 when Dubrovnik and its area suffered big losses. However, after the year of 1672 the fort is not mentioned anymore in historical writings, which suggests that it has been abandoned after that year and that nobody lived there anymore. As usual at that time with abandoned forts, surrounding residents built their houses and boundaries using fort's stones, so the fort had been mostly disassembled. What was left of the fort is preserved and continuosly maintained. In April 2013 the fort was completely restored by the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities (Društvo prijatelja dubrovačke starine), which bought the fort from the Church in 1970 and made it accessible to visitors and tourists. In the first nine months of 2013, Eagle Tower was seen and visited by 5,800 visitors. Nonetheless, although unique and special, the Eagle Tower is not the only Konavle's attraction. This region and Croatian municipality has much to offer to tourists and travelers, such as folklore, beautiful hidden beaches like Pendza or Pasjaca, ATV Safari, Adrenalin parks, horseback riding and sightseeing paths and walking trails through Konavle and Cliffs of Konavle. Also, on the Croatian south you can see Cavtat, a small romantic city, and of course Dubrovnik with many of its attractions such as the cable car. Do not forget and remember for all times, all of that you can visit and see while staying in our apartments, which you can easily book right here, right now!
